How to Deodorize a Fursuit (Without Ruining the Fur)

Let's be real — fursuits get sweaty. After a full day at a convention, your suit has absorbed body heat, sweat, and whatever the dealer's hall was cooking. The good news? Deodorizing a fursuit is easy when you use the right products and technique. Here's how to keep your suit smelling as good as it looks.

What NOT to Do

Before we get into what works, let's talk about what to avoid:

  • ❌ Don't use Febreze or household fabric sprays. These aren't formulated for faux fur and can leave residue that attracts dirt or damages the fibers over time.
  • ❌ Don't soak the suit to "wash out" the smell. Over-wetting foam bases can cause mold and structural damage.
  • ❌ Don't use heat to dry faster. Hair dryers and dryers on high heat can melt synthetic fur fibers.

⚠️ Where NOT to Spray — Important!

Fursuit sprays are designed for faux fur only. Before you mist your suit, keep these no-spray zones in mind:

  • ⛔ Resin or plastic eyes and noses — spray can cloud, stain, or damage the finish. Wipe these areas with a dry cloth instead.
  • ⛔ Foam bases and inner padding — if the foam is exposed or accessible, avoid direct spray. Saturating foam traps moisture and can lead to mold.
  • ⛔ Airbrushed or painted details — liquid can lift or fade custom paint work. Spray around these areas carefully.
  • ⛔ Electronics (fans, LEDs, animatronics) — never spray near any electronic components. Remove or cover them before spraying.
  • ⛔ Velcro and zipper teeth — spray residue can gum up closures over time. Avoid direct contact.
  • ⛔ Your skin or face — this product is for the suit, not the suiter! Don't spray while wearing the suit.

Always spray with the suit off, laid flat or hung up, and allow it to fully air dry before putting it on.

The Right Way to Deodorize

Step 1: Air it out first.

As soon as you're done suiting, hang your fursuit in a well-ventilated space. Fresh air alone handles a surprising amount of odor — don't skip this step. Give it at least 30–60 minutes before moving on.

Step 2: Apply a fursuit-safe deodorizing spray.

Once the suit has aired out, lightly mist the fur with a 2oz fursuit spray. The key word is lightly — you want a fine mist, not a soaking. Hold the bottle 6–8 inches from the fur and spray in a sweeping motion, avoiding the no-spray zones listed above.

Step 3: Brush while damp.

Right after spraying, use a fursuit comb or slicker brush to work through the fur. This distributes the spray evenly, prevents matting, and helps the fur dry fluffy instead of clumped.

Step 4: Let it dry completely.

Never store a damp suit. Give it at least a few hours of air drying before putting it away.

For Heavy-Duty Odor (Post-Con Recovery)

If your suit has been through a multi-day convention, a single spray might not cut it. Try this:

  1. Air out for several hours or overnight.
  2. Apply a generous (but not soaking) mist of your 2oz spray to the fur only.
  3. Brush thoroughly.
  4. Repeat once more the next day.
  5. Store only when fully dry and odor-free.

Keep It Consistent
