How to Clean and Care for Your Fursuit: A Complete Guide

Your fursuit is more than a costume — it's an expression of who you are. Whether you've had yours for years or just unboxed your first partial, keeping it clean and well-maintained means it'll look great and last for many more cons to come. Here's everything you need to know about fursuit care, from quick between-wear refreshes to deeper cleaning sessions.

Why Fursuit Care Matters

Fursuits are made from delicate materials — long-pile faux fur, foam bases, resin eyes, and hand-stitched details that can't just be tossed in the washing machine. Sweat, body oils, and convention dust build up fast, especially during a full day of suiting. Regular care keeps your suit smelling fresh, prevents matting, and protects your investment.

The Fursuit Care Routine: Step by Step

After Every Wear

1. Air it out immediately. Never stuff a sweaty suit back into a bag. Hang it in a well-ventilated area — a fursuit stand or even a padded hanger works great.

Most faux fur can be hand-washed in a bathtub with cold water and a gentle detergent — but always check with your maker first, since foam bases and some attachments may not be water-safe. After washing, brush the fur while damp and allow to air dry fully (this can take 24–48 hours). Never use a dryer on high heat.

You don't need to do a full wash every time you suit up — and honestly, you shouldn't. Deep washing too frequently can wear down faux fur fibers over time. • 🚫 Electronics and LED components — If your suit has lights, fans, or any wiring, keep spray well away from those areas to prevent short circuits or corrosion.
